In Vietnam, people give out similar presents and they are called ‘Lai See’.

China

Apart from the Chinese New Year, Chinese people often give out red packets in occasions such as wedding, birthdays, new store grand opening and so on and so forth.

When Chinese people receive a wedding invitation, people often call it as a ‘red bomb’ as it means you have to give out red packets to the newlyweds.

 

Other countries

In Vietnam, people give out similar presents and they are called ‘Lai See’.

Japanese people give out similar presents to children during Japanese New Year. Yet, they use white packets and the name of the receiver is written on the cover.

With the influence of Chinese, traditional Malaysian gives out green packets with Muslim symbols printed on them to children.
